How can I save on course fees?
If English is not your first language and you want to study at university in Australia have you thought about spending your first year at an Australian TAFE (college). You will obtain a diploma and can enter university in year 2. TAFEs and other private colleges have smaller class sizes (between 18 and 20) which means the tutor can spend more time with you which results in a higher success rate.
The cost of a one year TAFE diploma is often cheaper than the cost of spending your first year in university - so you will end up with two qualifications and get a better start to your further education in Australia.

What is TAFE?
TAFEs provide vocational educational and training throughout Australia. They are part of each states government controlled education sector.

Can I study at TAFE via correspondence if I live overseas?
Yes, however not all courses are available to overseas students and it does depend on the course. Examples of these are child care, aged care, building and water, due to practical components and Australian legislative requirements.
International students in Australia can only study CRICOS registered programs in Australia and must attend full time face to face classes as part of their visa.
I have completed a trade course overseas, am I eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL)?
Anyone with a trade qualification completed overseas may apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). Applicants must be an Australian resident or have permission to study or work in Australia and is living in Queensland. Can I work in Australia while I study?
Yes. International students in Australia on a student visa can apply for permission to work up to 20 hours a week during course time and full-time during vacation periods. If you have the right to work this can be shown on your visa. Full details on the right to work can be found at www.immi.gov.au
What are the entry requirements to study at Australian institutions?
Students must meet minimum academic requirements and need a sufficient level of English language proficiency for entry to Australian education and training institutions. Institutions will assess whether you meet the selection criteria set for your proposed course of study. They will look at the level and content of the study you have completed in Australia or your home country.
What if I don't meet the entry requirements?
If you do not meet the entry requirements for further study you can enrol in secondary school in Australia. If you do not meet undergraduate course entry requirements you may be able to enrol in Foundation Studies which prepare you for further study in Australia and reserve a provisional place in your proposed course. Bridging courses, such as a Master Qualifying program, are also offered.
