Australian General Practice:
A graduate course orientating
Overseas Trained General Practitioners to the Australian Health System
The Australian General Practice course provides education and information to International Doctors from non-English speaking backgrounds to familiarise themselves with the Australian Health System, giving them the information they will need to reduce the demands placed upon them in a busy medical practice.
Experience tells us that International Doctors find difficulty understanding the administrative side of medical practice in the Australian Health System when they first take up a position.
This course prepares both International Doctors and Australian Medical Graduates for the administrative side of general practice as well as rural health issues not being addressed by existing courses.
After consulting with a number of General Practices – we found that International Doctors generate insignificant amounts of revenue for General Practices for the first 9 months due to the training time required on administrative and other issues. This can be financially burdensome on the practice and also stressful on the Doctor.
Skilling Doctors off-premise saves time and money and often provides more thorough training.
Having ‘work-ready’ doctors improves Australia’s critical medical practitioner shortage.
Supervising doctors can focus on clinical care and supervision rather than on administrative training.
The Australian General Practice course compliments the existing verification processes of International Doctors through its comprehensive syllabus and practical placement.
By including practical placement the overseas training doctor’s abilities are assessed in a work environment.
Work-ready doctors are functional and profitable from their first appointment
The Australian General Practice course develops the Medical Practitioner’s knowledge and skills for a successful transition into the Australian Health System.
International Doctors and Medical Graduates will enhance their opportunity to provide a high level of medical care to their patient base form the beginning of their first appointment.
International Doctors encounter difficulties and limitations during the initiation phase of their practice as a result of their lack of knowledge of the Australian Health System.
Such limitations may result in patient frustration and loss of trust and confidence in those practitioners, thus contributing to an unsustainable Practice. This can adversely affect the growth of the patient base and prolong the period a doctor takes to be a fully functional medical practitioner.
The Australian General Practice course further educates the International Doctor and Medical Graduate in dealing with a culturally diverse patient population, thus enhancing the patient-provider relationship.
